Ants swarming food, a common insect problem in Oudtshoorn

Insect control in Oudtshoorn mostly comes down to three jobs: keeping scorpions out of the house, stopping harvester termites from stripping your lawn or grazing, and dealing with the ants, flies and pantry pests that thrive in the heat. We handle all of them, in town and on farms, and every job starts with an inspection to find where the insects are coming from.

What the Klein Karoo climate does

Summers over the Outeniqua Pass are hot and dry, and winters can be properly cold. Insects respond to both. Heat speeds up breeding, so an ant or fly problem builds quickly in December and January. Dry spells push insects towards water, which means kitchens, bathrooms and garden taps. When it cools down, scorpions and spiders look for shelter in garages, woodpiles and the gap under a door.

Scorpions

Scorpions are part of Karoo life, and most stay outside under rocks, rubble and loose bark. They come indoors at night, particularly in hot weather, through gaps under doors and cracks in older walls. As a general rule, species with thick tails and small pincers carry stronger venom than those with big pincers and thin tails, so anyone stung by a thick-tailed scorpion, especially a child or an older person, should get medical help.

We treat the outside of the house and outbuildings with a residual barrier around foundations, doorways and the places scorpions shelter, and we'll show you which rock piles, building rubble and stacked materials near the house are giving them cover. Clearing those matters as much as the treatment does.

Harvester termites

If bare patches are spreading across your lawn, or you're seeing small holes in the ground with bits of cut grass around them, harvester termites are the likely cause. They're common in the Klein Karoo and come out in the cooler parts of the day to cut grass and carry it underground. Over a season they can strip a lawn or a camp of grazing.

They aren't a fumigation job. We treat the active foraging areas directly, and we'll explain what to watch for afterwards so you know whether the colony is still working.

Farms, feed and ostrich camps

Oudtshoorn's farming, from ostrich camps to lucerne and feed stores, brings flies around animals, manure and feed, and stored product insects in grain and pellets. Flies are best handled with good manure and waste management, backed by treatment of the walls and eaves where they rest. Weevils, beetles and moths inside bags or stacks of feed are a different job, and our fumigation service in Oudtshoorn may be the right answer there.

Ants, cockroaches and pantry pests in town

In Oudtshoorn homes, summer ant trails are the most common complaint. Ant bait that the workers carry back to the nest is what finishes off a colony; spraying the trail doesn't. Cockroaches get gel bait where they breed. Weevils and pantry moths in flour, rice and pet food mean clearing out infested packets and storing the rest in sealed containers, sometimes with a treatment of the cupboards.

How a visit works

We inspect the house, garden and any outbuildings, find what's drawing the insects in and where they live, then treat with odourless, non-staining residual sprays and baits suited to each pest. For a normal insect treatment you don't need to unpack cupboards or leave home, and treated areas are safe for children and pets once dry.

A local habit worth keeping

Shake out boots, gloves and work clothes left in a garage or on the stoep before you put them on, and keep beds and cots a little away from the walls. Habits like these do more to avoid stings indoors than any spray.

What people get wrong

Killing every scorpion in sight with a spade and leaving the rubble pile where it was. More will move in. Taking away the shelter near the house is the step that actually reduces how many you see.

How much will it cost?

That depends on the property: a house in town is very different from a farmhouse with outbuildings and camps. The price also reflects which insects we're treating, how established they are, how much ground needs covering and whether follow-ups are needed. Commercial premises and farms can go onto a regular schedule. We'll quote before we start. Honestly, one scorpion in the garage once a summer doesn't need a treatment; clear the clutter and fit a seal under the door.

Questions we get asked

Are the scorpions in my house dangerous?

Most aren't seriously dangerous to healthy adults, but some are. Thick-tailed scorpions with small pincers have stronger venom, so take any sting from one seriously and get medical advice, especially for children.

How do I know if harvester termites are in my lawn?

Look for irregular bare patches and small holes in the soil with bits of cut grass around them. They're easiest to spot early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the termites are out foraging.

Will a garden spray kill harvester termites?

Not a general garden spray. The colony lives deep underground, so treatment has to target the active foraging areas. We'll inspect and advise on the right approach.

Do you come out to farms around Oudtshoorn?

Yes. We treat farmhouses, outbuildings, feed stores and sheds as well as homes and businesses in town.

Can you treat flies around livestock or ostrich pens?

We can treat the walls and buildings where flies rest around pens and sheds, but it works best alongside regular manure removal and covered feed. We'll look at the site and tell you what will make the biggest difference.
