Ants swarming food, a common insect problem in Groot Brak River

Most insect problems in Groot Brak River homes come from outside: ants from the garden, fleas from the lawn, spiders and flies drawn by damp ground and outdoor lights. So the treatment that works is the one that deals with both sides of the wall. We treat inside where the insects are bothering you, and build a barrier outside where they're coming from.

Why the river matters

Groot Brak River sits where the river meets the sea, with the estuary, riverbanks and established gardens all close together. Many homes are older family houses with mature trees, lawns and shrubs. Damp soil, shade and plenty of plant life make for a lot of insects, and the warm months bring them indoors. Older homes also tend to have more of the small gaps insects use: around window frames, under doors and where pipes come through the walls.

What's bothering you indoors?

Ants in the kitchen

The most common call we get. A trail appears overnight, usually after rain or a hot spell, heading for something sweet or greasy. Killing the trail doesn't stop them. We use ant baits that the workers carry back to the nest, so the colony itself is dealt with, and a residual treatment where they get in.

Fishmoths and silverfish

Older houses with built-in cupboards and damp corners suit fishmoths. You'll find them in bookshelves, linen cupboards and among stored papers, and they damage paper, wallpaper and some fabrics. They need a targeted treatment in the cracks where they shelter.

Fleas

Usually brought in by pets from sandy or grassy areas outside. Most of the population lives in carpets, bedding and the soil where the dog lies, not on the animal.

Pantry insects

Weevils in the rice, small moths around the kitchen light, beetles in the flour. These arrive in food packaging. Throw out what's infested, clean the shelves and store dry goods in sealed containers. If it's widespread or in a business, call us.

And outside?

Outside the walls, the problems are ants nesting in paving and lawns, spiders building webs under the eaves and around lights, and flies around bins, compost heaps and the braai area. Damp gardens near the river also support a lot of crawling insects that eventually wander inside.

We treat the outside of the house with a protective barrier: along the base of the walls, around doors and windows, under eaves and at other entry points. It's the outside work that stops the next lot coming in.

How the treatment goes

  1. We ask what you've been seeing and where, then inspect the house and garden to find nests, entry points and what's attracting the insects.
  2. Inside, we apply odourless, non-staining residual sprays in targeted areas, and baits where they work better than sprays.
  3. Outside, we apply the barrier treatment around the house.
  4. We tell you what we found and what will help keep the insects away.

You don't need to unpack cupboards or leave the house. Keep children and pets off treated areas until they've dried, then life carries on as normal.

What people get wrong

Spraying insecticide straight onto an ant trail. It feels like it's working, but you only kill the workers on the surface, and some ant species respond to a threat by splitting the colony into several new nests. You can turn one ant problem into four. Baits work slowly and quietly, which is exactly why they work. If you've already sprayed, mention it when we come, because it changes where we place bait.

Keeping insects down

  • Cut back plants and shrubs so they don't touch the walls or the roof.
  • Clear leaves from gutters and keep downpipes draining away from the house. Damp walls draw insects.
  • Store firewood and garden refuse away from the house.
  • Keep wheelie bins closed and away from the kitchen door.

A Groot Brak tip: if you're close to the river or estuary, switch your outside lights to yellow bulbs or turn them off when you don't need them. Bright white lights near water draw in clouds of flying insects in the evening, which bring spiders to your eaves and moths to your doors. It's a small change that makes a visible difference.

How much will it cost?

The price depends on the size of the house and garden, which insects you've got, how established they are and whether the job needs follow-ups. A straightforward ant treatment in a small house is a quick, simple job. A large house with fleas indoors and out, fishmoths in old cupboards and a big garden needs more time. For guesthouses and businesses, a regular service often makes more sense. We'll quote free after an inspection.

And if it's a few weevils in one packet of rice, you don't need us. Throw it out, clean the shelf and buy smaller packs. We'd rather you saved your money.

Cockroaches are a separate job; see cockroach control in Groot Brak River. For rats and mice, see rodent control in Groot Brak River. For the full picture of how we handle insects, see insect control in George.

Questions we get asked

Why do ants come inside after rain?

Heavy rain floods nests in the soil, and the ants move to higher, drier places, which often means your kitchen. Warm weather after rain makes it worse.

Do fishmoths actually do damage?

Yes. They feed on starch, paper, glue and some fabrics, so they can damage books, documents, wallpaper and clothing stored in damp cupboards.

Will the outside treatment harm my garden?

No. We apply it to the house walls, eaves and entry points, not across flower beds or vegetable patches.

Can I let my dog back in the house after treatment?

Yes, once the treated areas are dry. Keep pets out of those areas until then.

Do you treat mosquitoes from the river?

We focus on crawling and nuisance insects around the house. If flying insects are your main concern, tell us when you call and we'll be honest about what a treatment can and can't achieve.
