Ants swarming food, a common insect problem in George

The fastest way to get rid of insects in a George home or business is to identify exactly which insect it is, then use the treatment that suits it. Ants need bait that goes back to the nest. Cockroaches need gel bait in their hiding places. Fleas need the whole life cycle broken. Weevils need the infested food gone. One general spray for everything is why so many insect problems keep coming back.

Why George has insects all year

George sits under the Outeniqua Mountains and gets more rain than most of the Garden Route. Gardens stay green, the ground stays damp and winters are mild, so insects that would slow right down elsewhere stay busy for most of the year. Older suburbs such as Denneoord, Heatherpark and Blanco have established gardens, big trees and older buildings with plenty of cracks to hide in. Newer security and golf estates are often built next to bush or open ground, and insects move in from there. Then there's the commercial side of town, with restaurants, shops, food stores and warehouses, each with their own insect pressure.

The insects we treat, and how

Ants

Ants are the most familiar problem in George homes, especially after rain when they move indoors in long trails. We use ant baits that the workers carry back to the colony, which is what actually finishes the nest, plus a residual barrier around entry points. Spraying the trail alone only kills the foragers.

Cockroaches

Small German cockroaches breed in warm kitchens, behind fridges and inside appliances. Larger American cockroaches come in from drains and outside. Gel bait placed in cracks and harbourage areas does most of the work, supported by a residual treatment. For the full picture, see cockroach control in George.

Fleas

Fleas usually arrive with a pet, or are waiting in a house a previous tenant's pet lived in. Most of the population is eggs and larvae in carpets, pet beds and the shady spots in the garden where the dog sleeps. We treat inside and out, and it only works properly if the pets are treated by their vet at the same time.

Spiders

Most spiders in George homes are harmless, but nobody wants webs on every window frame and outside light. A residual barrier treatment around eaves, window frames, doors and garages cuts numbers down sharply, and clearing webs regularly stops them re-establishing.

Fish moths

Fish moths (silverfish) like damp, dark spots: bookshelves, linen cupboards, boxes in the garage and bathrooms. They're common in George's damper houses. A residual treatment in the cracks they use, plus reducing damp, keeps them down.

Pantry and stored product insects

Weevils, flour beetles and pantry moths arrive in a bag of flour, rice, cereal, birdseed or pet food, then spread through the cupboard. The first step is throwing out anything infested and cleaning the shelves. We then treat the cupboard area. For warehouses, food stores and feed suppliers with large amounts of stock, we look at fumigation in George.

What a treatment involves

  1. Inspection. We confirm what the insect is, find where it's coming from and look for the conditions keeping it there, such as damp, food or a gap in the wall.
  2. Targeted treatment. Odourless, non-staining residual sprays, gel baits, ant baits and barrier treatments inside and out, matched to the insect.
  3. Advice. A short list of practical things that stop the problem returning.
  4. Follow-up where needed. Fleas and cockroaches sometimes need a second visit to deal with eggs that hatch after the first treatment.

You don't need to unpack your kitchen or move out for a normal insect treatment. Once the treated areas are dry, they're safe for children and pets.

Businesses in George

Restaurants and food outlets need ongoing cockroach control to keep kitchens clean and ready for inspection. Shops, offices and warehouses deal with ants, cockroaches and stored product insects. We set up commercial and industrial contracts with scheduled visits worked around trading hours, and we do 24-hour call-outs when something can't wait.

Prevention that actually helps in George

Because George is wetter than most of the coast, damp is the thread that runs through many insect problems here. Fix leaking gutters and dripping outside taps, keep garden beds and mulch from piling against the house walls, and don't let firewood or pot plants sit right up against the foundations. That one change, a dry strip around the house, cuts down ants, fish moths and other crawling insects noticeably.

The common mistake

Using a "bug bomb" or fogger to fix everything at once. It rarely reaches where insects actually breed, can scatter cockroaches deeper into walls, and leaves the real source untouched.

How much will it cost?

Price depends on the insect, the size of the property and how established the problem is. A single ant treatment in a house is quick. A flea treatment that covers the house and garden, or a cockroach problem in a restaurant that needs follow-ups and a contract, takes more. We'll tell you what's included before we start. If it's a few ants after a storm, cleaning the trail and sealing the gap might be enough; if they keep coming back, the nest needs treating.

Elsewhere on the Garden Route

We do insect control across the region, including Wilderness, Knysna, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn, where the hot, dry Klein Karoo brings a different set of insects.

Questions we get asked

Which insects do you treat in George?

Ants, cockroaches, fleas, spiders, fish moths and stored product insects such as weevils, flour beetles and pantry moths are the main ones. If you're not sure what you have, describe it when you call.

Do I need to remove food from my kitchen before an insect treatment?

No. Keep food in closed containers and cupboards as normal. We treat cracks, crevices and runways, not your food.

Why do the ants come back after I spray them?

Because spray only kills the ants you can see. The nest keeps sending out new workers until it's dealt with, which is what baits are for.

How long after a flea treatment will the fleas be gone?

You'll see a big drop quickly, but new fleas can hatch for a couple of weeks. Keep vacuuming and keep pets treated, and a follow-up may be needed.

Can you service our restaurant or warehouse regularly?

Yes. We run commercial and industrial contracts in George with scheduled visits planned around your trading hours.

Is your insect treatment safe for my cat?

Yes, once it's dry. Keep pets off treated surfaces until then. Let us know about fish tanks or birds so we can take extra care around them.
