Cockroaches in Oudtshoorn are best dealt with by finding where they're getting water and shelter, then treating those spots with gel bait and a residual barrier. In the Klein Karoo heat, that's nearly always around drains, geysers, under sinks and behind fridges. Spraying the open floor kills a few; treating the places they breed is what clears them out.
Why the Karoo heat pushes cockroaches indoors
Oudtshoorn summers are long, hot and dry, and cockroaches dry out easily. Outside, they shelter in drains, sewers, under paving and in garden waste, and when it's really hot they move towards moisture. A dripping outside tap, a leaking geyser overflow or a damp laundry is a magnet. From there, the step inside is short: a floor drain, a gap under the back door, a hole around a pipe.
Winter brings the opposite problem. Oudtshoorn nights get properly cold, and German cockroaches, which live indoors anyway, crowd into the warmest spots in the house: behind fridges, inside motor housings, near the geyser and in the back of the stove. So the problem doesn't go away in winter. It just moves.
Spotting the problem
- Large reddish-brown cockroaches coming up through a shower or laundry drain on hot nights
- Smaller light-brown ones scattering when you switch the kitchen light on
- Black, pepper-like droppings in drawers, on top of door frames and along shelves
- Brown egg cases glued into corners and behind appliances
- A musty, oily smell in a closed cupboard
If you're seeing small cockroaches during the day, the colony is already large. If you'd like to check what you've got, our identification page helps.
What a treatment involves
We start by inspecting, because a cockroach problem from the drains and a cockroach problem in the kitchen need different treatment. We look at the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, outside drains, the geyser area and any outbuildings.
For German cockroaches indoors, gel bait is the main tool. We place small dots in the cracks, hinges and voids where they hide. They feed on it, go back to their harbourage, and pass it through the colony. For American cockroaches coming in from outside, we apply an odourless, non-staining residual spray around drains, doorways and the base of the walls as a protective barrier.
For a normal treatment you don't need to unpack cupboards or leave the house, and once the spray has dried it's safe for children and pets.
Guesthouses, B&Bs and restaurants
Oudtshoorn is a tourist town, with a lot of visitors coming through for the Cango Caves and the ostrich farms. A guest who sees a cockroach in a bathroom will remember it, and a restaurant kitchen has all the warmth, food and water a German cockroach could want. For hospitality businesses, regular treatment on a service contract is far cheaper than dealing with a full infestation. We can work around your bookings and trading hours.
Feed stores and farm outbuildings get cockroaches too, often alongside stored product insects. If you've got weevils or moths in feed or grain, have a look at our page on fumigation in Oudtshoorn.
A Klein Karoo prevention tip
Check the floor drains you seldom use. In a dry, hot climate, the water in drain traps evaporates faster than people expect, especially in a guest bathroom, an outside shower or a farm outbuilding. Once a trap is dry, there's an open path from the sewer into the room. Pour water down every drain each week or two, and cover outside drains with a fine grid.
Beyond that, fix dripping taps and geyser overflows, keep pet bowls off the floor overnight, and don't leave dishes soaking in the sink after dark.
What people get wrong
Thinking a dry climate means no cockroaches, and so not taking the first few seriously. In practice the heat concentrates them around the water you provide, and by the time you're seeing them every night they're well established. The other common mistake is spraying over our gel bait with a supermarket insecticide, which spoils the bait and makes cockroaches avoid it.
How much will it cost?
The price depends on the size of the property, how many rooms are affected, whether outbuildings and drains need treating and how long the cockroaches have been there. A house kitchen is a smaller job than a guesthouse or restaurant, and a heavy infestation may need a follow-up visit. Commercial kitchens and guesthouses usually go onto a regular contract. We quote free.
If you've seen one large cockroach come up a drain on a hot night, a drain cover and some water down the trap may be all you need. Regular sightings, or small cockroaches in the kitchen, mean it's time for a treatment.
Our cockroach treatments carry a 3-month guarantee, and we've worked across the Garden Route and Klein Karoo for more than 25 years. For ants, scorpions and other insects, see insect control in Oudtshoorn.

Questions we get asked
Are cockroaches worse in summer or winter in Oudtshoorn?
Both, in different ways. In summer the heat drives large cockroaches up from drains towards water. In winter, German cockroaches crowd into the warm spots behind appliances indoors.
Do the big flying cockroaches breed in my house?
Usually not. American cockroaches mostly breed in drains, sewers and garden waste and come inside looking for water. Blocking their way in is a big part of the fix.
Can you treat a guesthouse without disturbing guests?
Yes. A normal treatment doesn't need anyone to move out, and we can plan around your bookings. Guests just need to keep off treated surfaces until they're dry.
Why do cockroaches come up through the shower drain?
Because the water in the drain trap has dried out, or the drain has no cover. Keeping water in the trap blocks the route from the sewer.
How long does the gel bait keep working?
It stays attractive to cockroaches for a good while if it isn't wiped or sprayed over. Avoid cleaning the cracks and hinges where it's been placed.
