Most insect problems in a Tergniet holiday home can be treated in a single visit, while you're there or while the house is empty, with no need to move furniture or clear the cupboards. Here's exactly how it works, followed by the problems we see most along this short stretch of coast and what you can do between visits.
What happens when you call
- Tell us what you're seeing. Bites on the ankles, ants on the counter, flies in the kitchen, holes in a packet of rice. A photo helps, and so does knowing whether pets have stayed in the house.
- We arrange access. If you're not down at the coast, we can work with whoever holds the key.
- We inspect. We look for the source: where the ants are getting in, where the fleas are breeding, where the flies are laying, which pantry item is infested.
- We treat. Odourless, non-staining residual sprays around the outside walls and frames and inside along skirting, ant baits that the workers carry back to the nest, and targeted flea treatment in carpets, under beds and where pets sleep.
- You carry on. Once surfaces are dry, the house is safe for children and pets. If the insects we treated for come back within three months, so do we.
The insects we're called about in Tergniet
Fleas that appear when you arrive
This one surprises people. The house seemed fine when you left, but if a dog or cat stayed over the holidays, flea eggs and pupae in the carpets and between floorboards can wait for weeks. When people walk in again, the movement and warmth trigger them to hatch, and suddenly everyone's ankles are bitten. Treating the house deals with the fleas in it. Treating your pets with a vet-recommended product at the same time stops new ones arriving.
Ants after rain
Sandy coastal soil drains fast, but heavy rain still floods ant nests and pushes colonies up and indoors. They head straight for sugar, pet food and anything left on a counter. Baits finish the colony; sprays alone only stop the trail you can see.
Flies around fish and braais
Homes this close to the beach often have a fish cleaning spot, a braai and an outside bin. In summer, that's a fly nursery. Flies lay eggs in fish scraps, braai fat and bins, and within days you've got a kitchen full of them.
Fishmoths and pantry pests
Damp sea air and a closed-up house suit fishmoths in linen cupboards and bookshelves. Weevils and moths turn up in flour, cereal or rice left in the cupboard from the last visit.
A Tergniet tip for the fishermen
If you clean your catch at home, do it in one spot, rinse it down well straight afterwards, and put the scraps in a sealed bag in a bin with a tight lid, not in an open bucket. Take that bag to the bins on the day, especially if you're about to leave. That single habit will cut your fly problem more than any spray.
What people often get wrong
Treating only the house for fleas, or only the dog. Fleas spend most of their life cycle off the animal, as eggs, larvae and pupae in carpets and bedding. Treat one without the other and the cycle simply carries on. Vacuuming thoroughly and washing pet bedding before a treatment also helps a great deal; empty the vacuum outside afterwards.
Between visits
- Leave no open food behind: take flour, cereal, sugar and pet food home, or keep them in sealed containers.
- If animals stayed, vacuum and wash their bedding before you lock up.
- Pack linen into sealed boxes and leave cupboard doors slightly open for air.
- Clean the braai grid and empty the bins on the day you leave.
How much will it cost?
The variables are the size of the house, which insects we're treating, how settled they are and whether a follow-up is needed. A straightforward ant treatment is a short job. A flea problem spread through several carpeted rooms takes longer and sometimes needs a second visit once more eggs have hatched. A few fishmoths in one cupboard can often be handled with a clear-out and better ventilation, with no treatment at all. We quote before we start.

Questions we get asked
Can you treat the house while it's empty?
Yes. Many Tergniet owners book us while they're away. We just need someone to let us in, and we'll report back on what we found and treated.
Why am I still seeing fleas after the treatment?
Some pupae hatch after the treatment and are killed when they cross the treated surfaces, so you may see a few for a while. Keep vacuuming, because the vibration brings them out sooner.
Do you treat flies?
We can treat the surfaces flies rest on around bins and the braai area, but removing what they breed in, like fish scraps and braai fat, is what actually solves a fly problem.
Is the treatment safe for visiting grandchildren and pets?
Yes, once it's dry. Keep children and animals off treated surfaces until then, and there's no need to leave the house.
Will the ants come back after the next big rain?
Not if the colony has been dealt with. Baits that the workers carry back to the nest are what stop the repeats, and our treatments carry a 3-month guarantee.
Do you come out to Tergniet from George?
Yes. We cover the coast between Mossel Bay and George, including Tergniet and the villages around it.
