Is insect treatment safe with small children and pets in the house? Yes, done properly. For a normal insect treatment, we use odourless, non-staining residual sprays and targeted baits. You don't need to move out or unpack anything. Keep children and animals off the treated surfaces until they're dry, and after that the house is back to normal. That's the question most Fraai Uitsig parents ask first, so it's the right place to start.
What Fraai Uitsig families are usually dealing with
Fraai Uitsig is a residential area in the Groot Brak River area, mostly family homes with gardens. Gardens, pets and children bring their own insect problems, and they're usually the same handful:
- Ants heading for lunchboxes, juice spills and pet food.
- Fleas carried in by the dog or cat, then living in carpets, couches and pet beds.
- Spiders in garages, toy boxes, play areas and under outdoor furniture.
- Pantry insects like weevils and moths in cereals, flour and bird seed.
- Fishmoths in cupboards, school books and stored clothes.
Cockroaches and rodents are separate jobs with their own methods. If you've seen them too, see cockroach control in Fraai Uitsig or rodent control in Fraai Uitsig.
A visit, from start to finish
We talk first
We'll ask what you've seen, where and since when, and who's in the house: babies, toddlers, pets, anyone with allergies or asthma. That shapes where and how we treat.
We inspect
Inside, we check the kitchen, bedrooms, living areas, pet sleeping spots and anywhere insects have been seen. Outside, we look at the garden, the walls, paving, play areas and the gaps where insects are getting in. We're looking for the source, not just the insects in the passage.
We treat with the household in mind
For ants, we place baits that the workers carry back to the nest, positioned where children and pets aren't going to reach them. For fleas, spiders and other crawling insects, we apply residual sprays to the areas that need them, inside and out, with a protective barrier around the house. We don't spray toys, food surfaces or children's bedding.
We tell you what happens next
How long to keep everyone off treated areas, what you might notice in the next few days, and what will help the treatment last. For fleas especially, there are a few things you'll need to do too.
The flea routine that actually works
Fleas are the most stubborn insect problem in a family home, because the adult fleas you see are only a small part of the population. Eggs, larvae and pupae are in carpets, rugs, pet beds and the shady soil where the dog lies outside. To break the cycle:
- Treat every pet in the house with a product from your vet, on the same day as our treatment.
- Wash pet bedding and throws in hot water.
- Vacuum carpets, rugs and couches thoroughly before we arrive, and keep vacuuming every few days afterwards. The vibration brings pupae out to hatch and meet the treatment.
- Don't mop or steam-clean the treated areas for the time we advise.
Seeing a few fleas for a week or two after treatment is normal. It's the last pupae hatching.
A mistake we see in family homes
Combining several shop-bought products: an aerosol in the kitchen, a powder in the garden, a plug-in in the bedroom and a flea bomb in the lounge. Parents do this to protect the kids, and end up with a lot more chemical in the house than a single professional treatment, used in the wrong places, while the source of the problem is still untouched. One properly targeted treatment is usually safer and more effective.
Prevention for gardens and play areas
- Keep the lawn short, especially where the kids play and the dog rests. Fleas and ticks prefer long, shaded grass.
- Store bird seed, dog food and cereals in sealed containers.
- Shake out shoes, gloves and toys left outside before bringing them in.
- Keep sandpits covered when not in use, so cats don't treat them as litter boxes. That's a common source of fleas around play areas.
The local tip: Fraai Uitsig gardens near the Groot Brak River stay damp for a while after rain, and that's when ants are most likely to march indoors. Wipe down kitchen counters and pack away pet food before bed on rainy days, and you'll often avoid an ant trail the next morning.
How much will it cost?
It depends on the size of your home and garden, which insects you've got, how long they've been there and whether a follow-up is needed. A simple ant treatment is a small job. A flea problem across the house, garden and a couple of pets takes more work, and sometimes a second visit. We'll quote free once we've seen the property.
Being honest: if you've found weevils in one bag of flour, throw it out, wipe the shelf and move on. You don't need a pest controller for that. Call us when the problem keeps coming back or is spreading.

Questions we get asked
How long must the kids stay out of treated rooms?
Only until the treated surfaces are dry. We'll tell you on the day roughly how long that will be, depending on the area and the weather.
Is the treatment safe for someone with asthma?
The sprays we use are odourless, but tell us about asthma or allergies before we start. We can plan the treatment and ventilation around it and advise that person to stay out until the areas are dry.
Can you treat the garden where the kids play?
We focus our outside treatment on the house walls, eaves, paving cracks and entry points. Play areas and sandpits are treated only where needed and with care, and we'll talk you through it first.
My dog has fleas but I can't see any in the house. Should I still treat?
Usually, yes. Most of the flea population lives as eggs and larvae in carpets and bedding, so treating only the dog often means the problem keeps returning.
What if the ants come back after a week?
Some activity in the first days is normal while the colony takes the bait. If the ants we treated return within three months, our guarantee covers a re-treatment.
