Ants being treated during pest control in Knysna

Most pest problems in Knysna come down to the same few culprits: ants after rain, roof rats using the trees, German cockroaches in kitchens, and spiders, fleas and fishmoths in damp, shaded homes. We inspect first, treat where they're actually living, and give you a 3-month guarantee on the work. Here's what to expect, and when.

A pest calendar for Knysna

Spring

Ant colonies wake up and expand, and trails start appearing in kitchens and bathrooms. Fleas pick up as the weather warms, especially in homes with dogs that spend time in the garden. It's a good time for a barrier treatment around the outside of the house, before numbers build.

Summer

The busiest season for insects, and for Knysna's restaurants and holiday rentals. Flies around bins and outdoor dining, cockroaches in busy kitchens, and ants getting into anything sweet. Holiday homes that have been shut for months often open up to fishmoths in the cupboards and spiders in every corner.

Autumn

Rodents start looking for shelter. Roof rats run along branches that touch the gutters, and mice move in from gardens and bush. If you've had rats before, autumn is when to get bait stations checked and branches trimmed back.

Winter

Rodents are at their most active indoors, and cold, damp weather drives some insects into the house too. It's also a quiet time in many rentals, which makes it a sensible window for a thorough treatment before the next season.

Why Knysna is its own case

The indigenous forest comes right up to many Knysna neighbourhoods, and on the hillsides it's common for trees to touch the roof. That's a bridge for rats and a constant source of spiders and ants. Down near the lagoon it's damp, and dampness suits cockroaches, fishmoths and the insects that feed on mould. Then there's the timber: a lot of Knysna houses are built from wood or have timber decks, and older wooden buildings have more gaps for pests to use.

None of that means you have to put up with pests. It means a treatment here has to account for the trees, the damp and the building, not just spray the skirting boards.

Homes, rentals and businesses

We look after family homes all over town, as well as holiday rentals, guesthouses, shops and restaurants around the waterfront and further afield. For commercial kitchens and food businesses, we set up a regular service so cockroaches and rodents are dealt with on a schedule, not after a customer has seen one. For rental owners, a treatment between guests or before the busy season stops small problems becoming bad reviews.

What happens when you call

  1. You tell us what you're seeing, and we book a visit.
  2. We inspect the house or premises to find the cause: the nest, the entry point, the food source.
  3. We treat with the right method for the pest, from odourless, non-staining residual sprays and protective barriers to gel baits, ant baits, bait stations and traps.
  4. We explain what we found and what will stop it coming back.

For a normal treatment you don't need to clear out your cupboards or leave home, and once everything's dry it's safe for children and pets. If a job calls for fumigation, which means sealing a space and keeping it empty until it's cleared, we'll explain that properly first.

One local tip

Keep a clear gap of at least an arm's length between your roof and the nearest branches. In a forest town it's the single most useful thing you can do, because it cuts off the easiest route for rats and takes away a lot of the leaf litter and shade that ants and spiders use around the gutters.

Where people go wrong

Treating the house once and forgetting the outside. In Knysna, most pests are coming in from the garden or the trees, so a treatment that only covers indoors is fighting the tide. A barrier outside, and sorting out what's giving them a way in, is what makes the result last.

How much will it cost?

It depends on which pest, the size of the property, how established the problem is and whether proofing or follow-up visits are needed. A standard ant treatment for a home is a fairly quick job. Rats in the roof of a large timber house, or a restaurant kitchen on a contract, are more involved. Quotes are free, and we'll tell you up front what's included. If a cheap fix from the hardware store will genuinely do the job, we'll say so.

Questions we get asked

Do you only do houses, or businesses too?

Both. We treat homes, holiday rentals, guesthouses, shops, restaurants and industrial premises, and can set up regular service contracts for businesses.

Can you treat a timber house safely?

Yes. Our residual sprays are non-staining and suitable for use in wooden homes, and we pay particular attention to the gaps and voids timber buildings tend to have.

What does the 3-month guarantee mean in practice?

If the pest we treated for comes back within three months, we return and re-treat at no extra charge.

Are the treatments safe for my pets?

Yes, once the treated areas are dry. Rodent bait is kept in lockable stations that pets can't open, and we use traps where stations aren't suitable.

How often should a Knysna home be treated?

There's no fixed rule. Many homes only need treating when a problem appears, while rentals and food businesses do better with regular scheduled services.

Do you offer 24-hour call-outs?

Yes, we offer 24-hour call-outs for urgent problems. Phone 044 012 5011 and we'll arrange it.
