Ants being treated during pest control in Groot Brak River

Yes, we cover Groot Brak River. It's an easy drive from our George office along the N2, and we treat homes and businesses here for ants, cockroaches, rats and mice, fleas, spiders and pantry pests. The first thing we'll do is work out why they're in your house, because in an older home the answer is usually a gap, a leak or a food source that can be fixed.

Older homes, older gaps

A lot of Groot Brak's houses are established family homes, some of them lived in by the same family for a long time. That's part of the town's charm, but older buildings settle. Gaps open up under doors, around old pipe runs and where the roof meets the walls. Wooden floors and ceiling boards shrink and leave cracks. Each of those is a doorway for mice, a hiding place for cockroaches or a route for ants.

Mature gardens add to it. Big trees over the roof, thick creepers on the walls and flowerbeds built right up against the house give pests shelter on your doorstep.

Living near the river and estuary

Being close to water has its side effects. Damp ground near the river suits ants, and homes near the water tend to see more mosquitoes on still evenings. Garages full of boats, canoes, fishing gear and bait fridges draw flies and rodents, especially when they're not used for a while.

Quick checks before you call

  • Shine a torch behind the fridge and under the sink for droppings or cockroaches.
  • Follow an ant trail outside to see where it disappears into the ground.
  • Listen in the ceiling for an hour after dark, when rats are noisiest.
  • Look in the pantry for webbing, holes in packets or tiny beetles.

Whatever you find, mention it when you phone. It helps us plan the visit and bring the right equipment the first time.

A year of pests in Groot Brak

  • Spring: ants become active and start trailing indoors, and fleas pick up as the weather warms.
  • Summer: cockroaches breed fastest and flies are at their worst around bins and braai areas.
  • Autumn: rats and mice start moving into roofs and garages as the nights get colder.
  • Winter: rodents settle in, and pantry moths and weevils show up in stored food that hasn't been touched for a while.

What happens when we come out

We talk to you first about what you've seen, then inspect the house and garden to find the entry points, nesting spots and whatever is feeding them. The treatment is aimed at that: odourless, non-staining residual sprays as a barrier inside and out, gel bait for cockroaches, ant bait that gets carried back to the nest, and bait stations or traps for rodents. You stay at home, cupboards stay packed, and treated surfaces are safe for children and pets once they're dry. Before we leave, we'll point out anything you can do to stop it happening again.

One local tip

If you keep a boat, canoe or fishing gear at home, store it off the ground and away from the walls of the house, and don't leave old bait in the garage fridge or a bucket. Covered gear that sits in a corner for months is exactly where rats and cockroaches set up home.

A common mistake

Spraying the ant trail on the kitchen counter. It kills the ants you can see and leaves the nest, which is often under paving, in a flowerbed against the wall or inside a cavity. The ants find another way in within days. Baits work because the workers carry them home to the rest of the colony.

How much will it cost?

That depends on the size of your home, which pest we're dealing with, how long it's been going on, and whether proofing or a follow-up visit is needed. A single ant or cockroach treatment in a family home is a straightforward job. Rats in the roof of a large older house with lots of entry points take more time. Businesses can go onto a regular contract. We'll look, explain what's needed and quote before we start. If it's a handful of ants after a hot day, try cleaning up and a shop-bought ant bait first; if that doesn't hold, call us.

Questions we get asked

Do you also cover Klein Brak River and Glentana?

Yes. We work right along this stretch of coast, including Klein Brak River, Glentana and the smaller seaside areas nearby.

Can you do anything about mosquitoes near the river?

We can reduce them around the house by treating the walls and sheltered spots where they rest, but we can't treat the river or estuary itself. Emptying standing water in buckets, pot-plant saucers and blocked gutters helps a lot.

My house has wooden floors. Can mice get underneath?

Yes, if there are gaps in the foundation vents or around pipes. We'll check the underfloor openings and tell you which ones need mesh or sealing.

Should I cover my fish tank during a treatment?

Yes, it's a good idea. Cover the tank and switch off the air pump while we treat, and move caged birds to another room. We'll tell you when it's fine to put things back.

How soon can you come out?

We offer 24-hour call-outs for urgent problems. Otherwise, we'll book a time that suits you.
