A beach house free of bugs before the holidays start

Outeniqua Strand homes often sit closed for months, then fill up overnight. We treat ants, fleas, spiders and flies so the first week isn't spent fighting them.

Ants swarming food, a common insect problem in Outeniqua Strand

The best time to treat an Outeniqua Strand holiday home for insects is a week or two before you or your guests arrive, not on the first evening when the ants have found the sugar bowl. A pre-season treatment inside and out deals with whatever moved in while the house was quiet, and puts a barrier in place for the busy weeks ahead.

What happens to a house that stands empty

Outeniqua Strand is a small coastal holiday area between Groot Brak and Glentana, with beachfront homes that are busy in season and quiet the rest of the year. A closed-up house is undisturbed, dark and often a little damp from the sea air. For insects, that's ideal.

While nobody's there, spiders spin webs across windows, under furniture and in the corners of the garage. Fishmoths settle into linen cupboards. Ants scout the kitchen and find the crumbs left after the last visit. And if a pet was staying in the house, flea eggs in the carpets can hatch when people come back, because fleas respond to vibration and warmth. That's why some families arrive to a house that seemed fine and get bitten the same night.

Our pre-season treatment, step by step

  1. Arrange access. If you're not on site, we agree a time and a way in with you or whoever looks after the house.
  2. Inspect. We walk through the house and around the outside, looking for ant trails, webs, droppings, flea activity and the gaps insects use to get in: under doors, around sliding doors, at pipe entries and under the eaves.
  3. Treat indoors. Odourless, non-staining residual sprays in the areas that need it, with ant baits placed where trails are active.
  4. Treat outdoors. A protective barrier along the walls, around doors and windows, under eaves and around outdoor entertaining areas.
  5. Report back. We tell you what we found and anything that needs fixing, such as a gap under the beach-side door or a damp spot that's drawing insects.

Nobody needs to move out and cupboards don't need to be unpacked. Once the treated areas are dry, the house is safe for children and pets, so guests can move straight in.

The insects we deal with most here

  • Ants: the first thing visitors notice. Baits carried back to the nest are what actually stop them.
  • Spiders: under the eaves, around outside lights and in garages and storerooms.
  • Fleas: in carpets, rugs and where pets sleep, inside or out.
  • Flies: around bins, the braai and outside showers where fish has been cleaned.
  • Fishmoths: in cupboards, bookshelves and stored linen.

Cockroaches and rodents can also turn up in holiday homes. If that's what you're seeing, mention it when you call, as they need their own treatment.

What most owners get wrong

Leaving a flea problem until the house is full. Fleas left in carpets after a dog's visit in winter can quietly wait for months. The day the family arrives, with kids and dogs running around, they hatch and bite. Treating the pet alone won't fix it either, because most of the flea population is in the house and garden, not on the animal. If dogs stay in the house at any time of year, it's worth including flea treatment in the pre-season visit.

Keeping it that way through the season

  • Put a sealed container in the kitchen for sugar, cereals and snacks, so visitors don't leave food open.
  • Provide bins with tight lids, and ask guests to take rubbish out daily.
  • Rinse the braai grid and clean any fish-cleaning area straight after use. Fish scraps bring flies faster than anything else.
  • Keep outdoor lights off when you don't need them. Lights draw flying insects, and spiders follow them.

The beachfront tip: sand that's tracked indoors gathers along sliding-door tracks and under rugs, along with crumbs and dead insects, and it's a favourite hiding spot for small crawling insects. A good doormat outside every beach-facing door, and a quick vacuum of the tracks during the stay, keeps a lot of insects from settling in.

How much will it cost?

Price depends on the size of the house and garden, which insects are present, how long they've had to settle in and whether you want a single pre-season treatment or regular visits through the year. A modest beach house with a few ants and webs is a quick job. A large home with fleas, a big outside entertainment area and outbuildings needs more time. If you let the house out, a regular service often works out more practical. We'll quote free once we know the property.

If you only see the odd spider web after months away, a broom and a good clean may be enough, and we'll tell you so. Where you need us is when ant trails, flea bites or flies keep coming back.

Questions we get asked

Do I need to be there for the treatment?

No. Many holiday home owners arrange access through a neighbour, caretaker or rental agent. We just need to be able to get into the house and around the outside.

How far ahead of the holidays should I book?

A week or two before the house is used is ideal. That gives the ant baits time to work and leaves the house ready for guests.

Will guests smell anything?

No. The residual sprays we use are odourless, and once they've dried there's nothing to notice.

Why do fleas appear when we arrive but not before?

Flea pupae can lie dormant in carpets and soil for a long time and hatch when they sense vibration and body heat. A full house wakes them up all at once.

Does the guarantee cover the whole holiday season?

Our treatments carry a 3-month guarantee. If the insects we treated come back within that time, we return and re-treat at no extra cost.
