Many people who phone us about fumigation in Groot Brak River don't actually need it. A cockroach or ant problem is solved with baits and residual sprays, and you can stay in the house. Gas fumigation is for insects you can't reach any other way: inside furniture, timber, bags of stored food or feed, or a whole storeroom. If that's your situation, here's how it works.
An honest check: fumigation or treatment?
- Insects on walls, floors, in cupboards or around the outside: a normal treatment, with no need to move out.
- Neat round holes and fine powder under an old wooden chest or table: likely wood borer, which often calls for fumigation of the item.
- Weevils, beetles or moths inside bags or stacks of stored goods: fumigation, especially where there's a lot of stock.
- A few weevils in one packet of flour: throw the packet out and clean the cupboard. That's genuinely enough most of the time.
Why it comes up in Groot Brak
Groot Brak River is a town of established family homes, many with old wooden furniture, built-in cupboards and garages or storerooms full of things that haven't moved in years. That's where wood-boring beetles go unnoticed until the powder starts appearing. The town sits on the river and estuary, and timber that stays damp is more attractive to some borers. Local businesses that keep food, seed or animal feed in storage can run into stored product insects too.
Reading the signs of wood borer
Round exit holes on their own don't prove a live problem, because they can be decades old. What matters is fresh activity. Vacuum away the powder under the piece and lay a sheet of dark paper beneath it. If new, pale dust appears over the following weeks, especially in the warmer months when adult beetles emerge, the borers are still working. Clean, sharp-edged holes are also more recent than dark, worn ones. If you can, do this check before you phone; it saves time on the day.
What fumigation day means for your household
This is the part people most want to know. A fumigated space is sealed and must be vacated by people and pets until we've ventilated it and cleared it as safe. Depending on the job, the sealed area might be a single room, a storeroom, a garage or a piece of furniture under gas-proof sheeting. Before we start, we'll tell you exactly which areas must be vacated, what needs removing and how long they must stay closed.
You'll usually need to plan for somewhere for pets to go, moving food, medicines and plants out of the area being sealed, and making sure nobody, from a domestic worker to a neighbour with a key, goes in before we've cleared it.
How we fumigate
- Inspect and confirm. We identify the insect and check that fumigation is actually needed.
- Prepare and seal. Gaps, vents and doors are sealed, or the items are covered with gas-proof sheeting.
- Apply the fumigant. We use registered fumigants such as phosphine, applied only by trained operators.
- Exposure. The area stays sealed for the time the product label requires to kill every stage, including eggs and larvae deep inside timber or produce.
- Ventilate and clear. We air out the space and confirm it's clear before anyone goes back in.
Something people often get wrong
Fumigation kills what's there on the day. It doesn't leave lasting protection behind. Bring in another infested piece of furniture or a new sack of contaminated feed and the problem can start again. Check second-hand wooden furniture for exit holes and powder before it comes into the house, and store dry goods in sealed containers.
A local prevention tip
In a garage or outbuilding near the river, keep wooden furniture and boxes off the floor on pallets, with a gap from the walls so air can move. Dry timber in a ventilated space is far less appealing to borers than wood sitting in a damp corner.
How much will it cost?
Fumigation is priced on the volume being treated, how easily it can be sealed, what's being fumigated and how long it has to stay closed. A single item under sheeting is a much smaller job than a full storeroom or a room of furniture. Businesses storing food or feed may also want regular inspections afterwards. We'll assess the job and quote before anything is sealed.
If it turns out you don't need fumigation, our pest control in Groot Brak River and insect control pages explain the alternatives. For larger fumigation jobs, see fumigation in George.

Questions we get asked
How long must we stay out of the house?
Until the sealed area has been ventilated and we've cleared it. The exact time depends on the fumigant label and the job, and we'll tell you before we start.
Can a single piece of furniture be fumigated?
Yes. Individual items can be covered with gas-proof sheeting and fumigated, which is often how wood borer in a chest or table is dealt with.
Do I need to be there on the day?
Someone needs to give us access and go through the preparation with us at the start. After that, everyone stays away from the sealed area until we let you know it's been cleared.
What happens to the food in the house?
Food, medicines and anything you'll eat or drink must come out of the sealed area or be protected exactly as we instruct. We'll go through it with you before the day.
Can I fumigate myself?
No. Fumigant gases are dangerous to people and animals and must only be applied by trained, registered operators.
