The quickest way to clear cockroaches is to stop chasing the ones you see and go after the places they breed. In most Knysna kitchens that means the warm, dark gaps behind and under appliances, inside cupboard hinges and around pipes. We put gel bait exactly there, back it up with a targeted spray where it's needed, and come back to check if the infestation was heavy.
A typical Knysna call
A guest at a holiday rental switches on the kitchen light late at night and sees small brown cockroaches scatter off the counter. The owner gets a message, and a bad review is a real worry. By the time we arrive, the roaches have been breeding behind the dishwasher and inside the kettle base for weeks, brought in on a grocery box or in a guest's bag.
That story plays out across town. Knysna has a busy restaurant and hospitality scene around the waterfront, lots of holiday rentals and plenty of homes near the lagoon where the air is often humid. Cockroaches like warmth, moisture and a constant food supply, and a kitchen that's used hard by changing guests or a restaurant crew gives them all three.
Which cockroach have you got?
German cockroaches
Small, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. These are the indoor ones, living in kitchens, fridges, stoves and dishwashers. They breed fast, which is why a few can become many in a short time. Most restaurant and rental problems are German cockroaches.
Larger cockroaches
Bigger, reddish-brown roaches tend to come up from drains, sewers and damp outside areas, or in from the garden at night. They're often seen in bathrooms and near floor drains. Treating these means looking at where they're entering as much as where they're living.
If you're not sure, catch one under a glass and take a photo, or use our identification guide.
What we do
- Find the harbourage. We pull out appliances where we can, open cupboards, check under sinks, behind the fridge, inside the stove drawer and around plumbing. Fresh droppings, which look like ground pepper, and small brown egg cases show us where they're breeding.
- Bait it. Gel bait is placed in small spots inside the cracks and voids they use. Cockroaches feed on it and carry it back, and it keeps working as others feed.
- Spray with care. Where it helps, we apply an odourless, non-staining residual spray to cracks, edges and entry points, away from the bait so the two don't work against each other.
- Follow up. Heavier infestations, especially in commercial kitchens, need a return visit to top up bait and check progress.
You don't need to unpack your cupboards or leave home for a cockroach treatment. Once treated areas are dry, they're safe for children and pets.
For restaurants and food businesses
A commercial kitchen in Knysna is never going to be cockroach-proof on its own, because deliveries, packaging and staff come and go all day. What works is a scheduled service: regular inspections, bait topped up before numbers rise and a record of every visit. We'll set the times around service so the kitchen keeps running.
A tip for rental owners
Ask your cleaners to check two spots on every changeover: the base of the kettle and toaster, and the bottom of the cupboard under the sink. These are where crumbs and moisture collect, and where cockroaches show up first. Catching it at the first sighting turns a long job into a quick one. It also helps to unpack groceries straight away and throw the cardboard boxes out rather than storing them.
What most people get wrong
Using a fogger or bug bomb. It feels like it should reach everywhere, but it mostly drifts across open surfaces and drives German cockroaches deeper into walls and appliances, where they keep breeding. Spraying over gel bait is a close second, because it makes the bait less attractive. If you've already used either, tell us so we can plan around it.
How much will it cost?
It depends on how many rooms are affected, how established the colony is and whether it's a home or a commercial kitchen. A few roaches in a house kitchen is a modest job, often done in one visit. A heavy German cockroach infestation in a restaurant or a block of rentals needs more bait, more time and follow-ups, and usually works best on a contract. We'll quote first. If you've only ever seen one big roach that came in from the garden, sealing the gap under the door may be enough.

Questions we get asked
Why do I see more cockroaches right after a treatment?
It's common for a few days. The bait and spray flush them out of hiding, and affected roaches often wander into the open. Numbers should then drop steadily.
Can guests stay in a rental after it's treated?
Yes. A cockroach treatment doesn't require vacating, and treated areas are safe once dry. Many owners book it on a changeover day to keep it simple.
Do cockroaches spread disease?
They can. Cockroaches walk through drains and waste and then over food surfaces, so they can carry bacteria onto plates and food. That's a big part of why food businesses must control them.
Will cleaning alone get rid of them?
Cleaning helps a lot, but it rarely clears an established German cockroach infestation, because they breed inside appliances and wall voids that cleaning doesn't reach.
Do I need to empty my kitchen cupboards?
No. We work around your things. It helps if the area under the sink and behind the fridge is reachable, so we can get bait into the right places.
