The easiest way to keep pests out of a Tergniet holiday home is to have it treated a few weeks before you arrive, not on the day the family walks in. That gives baits time to work through ant and cockroach colonies, lets us check for rodents in the roof and garage, and means the house is ready when you are. If you live in Tergniet all year, the same treatments apply, just on your schedule rather than the holiday calendar.
What moves in while the house is closed
Tergniet is a small holiday area near Klein Brak, east of Hartenbos, with homes close to the beach. Many of them are shut for months at a stretch. A closed house near the sea is damp, dark, warm in the roof and completely undisturbed, and pests make the most of it.
- Mice and rats move into roof spaces, garages and storerooms, especially where there's something to eat, like birdseed, dog food or a forgotten box of crackers.
- Cockroaches come up through drains that have dried out, and settle behind kitchen appliances.
- Ants find any sweet or greasy residue in the kitchen and build trails from the garden.
- Fleas left over from the last visit with the dog can hatch from carpets when the house fills up again.
- Fishmoths and spiders thrive in the still, humid air of cupboards and corners.
Our pre-season visit, in order
- Roof, garage and outbuildings. We check for droppings, nests, gnaw marks and the gaps rodents are using. If they're there, we set lockable bait stations or traps, depending on whether pets will be in the house.
- Kitchen and bathrooms. Gel bait for cockroaches goes into cracks, hinges and behind appliances. Drains get treated too.
- The rest of the house. Odourless, non-staining residual spray goes into skirtings, cupboards and the corners where insects shelter, and we treat carpets for fleas if needed.
- Outside. A barrier treatment around walls, doors and windows keeps insects from the garden and beach dunes out.
- A short report. You get a summary of what we found and anything that needs fixing, like a gap under the garage door or a leak under the sink.
You don't need to be there, as long as someone can give us access. If you are there, you won't need to leave or unpack. Treated areas are safe for children and pets once dry.
Checks you can do yourself when you arrive
Open the pantry and look in the back corners. Small dark droppings mean mice. Peppery specks and a musty smell point to cockroaches. Lift the lid of the braai and check the cooler boxes and fishing gear in the garage, since anything with food or bait residue attracts rodents and flies. Check the top of the cupboards, and if the dog starts scratching in the first few days, it's probably fleas.

The Tergniet tip
Fishing and braaiing are a big part of a beach holiday, and both leave scraps. Clean fish and bait away from the house, put scraps in a lidded bin straight away and wash out cooler boxes before they go back into the garage. When you leave at the end of the season, take all opened dry food home, put plugs in the basins and showers, and close gaps under garage doors. It makes a big difference to what's waiting for you next time.
A point most owners miss
Leaving supermarket rat poison in the roof between visits feels like a good precaution. It isn't. Loose poison is a risk to pets and children when the house is in use, and rodents that eat it can die out of reach, leaving a smell that greets you on arrival. Lockable bait stations, checked regularly, are safer and more effective.
How much will it cost?
The quote depends on the size of the house, what we find, and how established it is. A clean, well-sealed house with a few ants is a quick visit. A house where rodents have been in the roof for months needs stations, proofing and a follow-up. If you rent the house out, a scheduled service between seasons is usually the simplest option. We'll quote free and tell you what's included. And if you only spot one or two mice when you arrive, a couple of snap traps may be all you need.

Questions we get asked
How far ahead of the holidays should I book?
A few weeks ahead works best. December is a busy time along the coast, and booking early also gives the baits time to work before you arrive.
Do you only work on holiday homes in Tergniet?
No. We treat permanent homes too, and the process is the same. The only difference is timing.
What happens if pests come back during the holidays?
Our treatments carry a 3-month guarantee. If the pests we treated for come back within that time, we return and re-treat at no extra cost.
Can you check bait stations while we're away?
Yes. Many owners have stations checked between visits, so rodent activity is caught early rather than found when the family arrives.
Why does my holiday house smell musty and stale?
Damp and lack of air are the usual causes, but a strong musty or oily smell in the kitchen can also be a sign of cockroaches. A rotten smell in the roof can mean a dead rodent.
Do I need to remove the linen before you treat?
No. We don't spray onto your bedding or linen, so you can leave cupboards as they are for a normal treatment.
