Fumigating a beach house in Outeniqua Strand

Holiday homes that stand closed for months can hide wood borer and stored product pests. The good news: an empty house is the easiest kind to fumigate.

Fumigation of a stored product infestation in Outeniqua Strand

You open up the beach house after a few months away and there's a small heap of fine, pale powder under the wooden table, or little beetles in the pantry. If insects are living inside timber, furniture or stored goods, fumigation is the treatment that reaches them. If they're only on surfaces, a normal spray will do, and we'll tell you which it is before anything else happens.

Why holiday homes here are prone to it

Outeniqua Strand is a small coastal holiday area, and many homes are used for part of the year and closed up for the rest. Closed houses don't get aired, cupboards stay shut and furniture isn't moved, so insects can work undisturbed for months. Beachfront homes also live with salt air and humidity, which keep timber and stored items damper than they'd be inland.

The usual finds:

  • Wood-boring beetles in older furniture and wooden fittings, shown by small round holes and powder
  • Weevils, flour beetles and pantry moths in food left over from the last holiday
  • Insects that arrived in second-hand or inherited furniture brought down to the coast

What to check when you arrive

  • Fine powder on the floor under wooden furniture, bed bases or cupboards
  • Small beetles on window sills, where emerging adults gather trying to reach the light
  • Pantry packets with holes, clumps or webbing inside
  • Small moths fluttering out when you open a cupboard

Take a photo of what you find before you clean it up. It helps us identify the insect and decide whether fumigation is needed or a lighter treatment will do the job.

An empty house is easier to fumigate

Gas fumigation always means the sealed area has to be vacated by people and pets until it's cleared. In a family home, that's the hardest part to arrange. In a holiday home that's empty anyway, it's much simpler. We can plan the fumigation for a time when nobody is staying, so the house is sealed, treated, ventilated and cleared well before you or your guests arrive.

What we still need from you: access, a clear picture of who has keys, and an agreement that nobody, including cleaners, letting agents or a neighbour checking on the place, goes in until we've cleared it.

How it's done

  1. Look first. We identify the insect and decide whether fumigation is needed, and whether it's the whole house, one room or individual items under sheeting.
  2. Get the house ready. Food, medicines and similar items come out of the area to be sealed. We'll tell you exactly what.
  3. Seal. Doors, windows, vents and gaps are sealed so the gas stays where it's needed.
  4. Fumigate. A registered fumigant such as phosphine is applied by trained operators and held for the exposure time on the label.
  5. Air out and clear. We ventilate and confirm the house is safe before anyone goes back in.

What fumigation won't do

A lot of people believe a fumigation protects the house for years. It doesn't. It kills the insects present on the day, but new ones can arrive in furniture, firewood or food. That's why the habits afterwards matter as much as the treatment itself.

Prevention for a house that sits empty

Before you close up, take dry food home or put it in sealed containers, leave cupboard doors slightly open so air can circulate, and keep wooden furniture away from damp walls on the sea-facing side of the house. If someone checks on the house in the off-season, ask them to open the windows for a while on dry days. And look over any second-hand wooden furniture for exit holes before you bring it to the coast.

How much will it cost?

The price depends on how much space or how many items are being fumigated, how well the house can be sealed, which insect we're dealing with and whether any other treatment is needed afterwards. A couple of pieces of furniture under sheeting is a much smaller job than sealing a whole house. We'll assess it and quote before we start.

An honest note: if all you've found is a few weevils in an old packet of pasta, you don't need us. Throw it away, wipe the shelf and keep food in sealed tubs next time.

If the problem turns out to be ants, cockroaches or fishmoths, see insect control in Outeniqua Strand or our general pest control page. For larger fumigation work, our George fumigation page has more detail.

Questions we get asked

Can you fumigate while I'm out of town?

Yes, as long as we can arrange access and confirm who holds keys. We'll keep you updated and let you know once the house has been cleared.

How soon can guests stay after a fumigation?

Not until the house has been ventilated and we've cleared it as safe. We'll give you the expected timing before we start, so you can plan bookings around it.

Does salt air make wood borer worse?

Not directly, but damp timber is more attractive to some wood-boring beetles, and beachfront homes tend to stay more humid. Good ventilation while the house is closed helps.

Will one fumigation get rid of wood borer?

It kills the borers in the treated items or space, including larvae inside the wood. It doesn't stop new infestations, so check wooden items before you bring them in.

What has to come out before fumigation?

People, pets, food, medicines and plants must all be out of the sealed area. We'll give you a list for your house before the day.
