Fumigation of a stored product infestation in Wilderness

A Wilderness fumigation usually comes down to one of two things: wood-boring beetles inside timber furniture or fittings, or insects that have spread through a store of food, linen or goods. In both cases the insects are inside something a spray can't get into, so a registered fumigant gas is used to reach them. The treated area is sealed, kept empty of people and animals, and only reopened once we've cleared it.

The Wilderness setting

Wilderness is a small coastal village east of George, with lakes, the lagoon, the Touws River and forested hillsides. Many homes are built in the bush, often with timber decks, wooden ceilings and a lot of wooden furniture. There are also plenty of guesthouses and holiday homes. Moist air off the water and shaded, tree-covered plots keep timber damp for longer, and damp wood is more attractive to borers. Busy guesthouse kitchens hold a lot of dry food, which is where stored product insects get started.

Signs it may be a fumigation job

  • Small round holes in wooden furniture, frames or panelling, with fine powder that reappears after cleaning
  • Beetles or moths through bulk dry goods in a guesthouse pantry or storeroom
  • Webbing or larvae in sacks of birdseed, pet food or flour that have been stored for a while
  • Infested boxes of stored items in a garage or outbuilding

And signs it isn't: ants, cockroaches, spiders or fish moths moving across floors and walls. Those are handled with normal sprays and baits, with no need to vacate. See insect control in Wilderness for that.

For guesthouse owners

Fumigation and paying guests don't mix, so planning is everything. We'll assess the infestation and tell you exactly which rooms or stores need to be sealed and for how long. Often we can sheet the affected furniture or stock and move it to an outbuilding or one sealable room, leaving the rest of the property in use. Where that isn't possible, we'll help you choose a gap in bookings, and we'll give you a clear timeline so you can plan around it.

A guesthouse pantry is a common source of trouble. Bulk buying makes sense, but large bags of flour, oats and cereal that sit open for weeks are where weevils and pantry moths breed. Decanting dry goods into sealed containers and using older stock first does more than any treatment.

How the work is done

Assessment. We check what's infested, whether it's active, how big the space is and how well it can be sealed. Old borer holes with no fresh powder may not need treatment at all.

Preparation. We give you a list: what to move out, what to leave and what we'll seal. Pets, plants, food that isn't being treated and certain metal items or electronics usually need to go.

Fumigation. Our trained operators apply a registered fumigant such as phosphine, either inside a sealed room or under gas-proof sheeting. Warning signs go up, and the area stays sealed for the full exposure time on the product label.

Clearance. We ventilate and test the area. Only once it's cleared can people and animals go back in.

This is the one treatment where you can't stay put. Fumigant gas is dangerous, so the sealed area must stay vacated until we confirm it's clear. It's never a DIY job.

A local tip

Trim back trees and shrubs that keep your walls and deck in permanent shade, and keep good airflow under wooden floors and decks. In Wilderness, wood that dries out between rainy spells is far less inviting to borers than wood that stays damp all year. Indoors, keep furniture a hand's width off walls that face the bush or the water, so air can move behind it.

What people get wrong

Treating the sealed room as off-limits only for the first day. We hear it often: someone needs the spare key, a guest's forgotten charger or a bottle from the storeroom, and pops in quickly. Any opening lets gas out and lets a person into a space that isn't safe yet. Before we seal up, take out everything you might need, and tell staff and family which doors stay shut until we've cleared them.

How much will it cost?

The price depends on how much is being fumigated, whether we're sealing a room or sheeting individual items, how much preparation is needed and, for guesthouses, how we have to work around bookings. A single piece of furniture is a small job. Several rooms of timber furniture or a full storeroom is a bigger one. We'll quote after the assessment, including how long the area will be out of use. If your problem only needs a spray or a pantry clear-out, we'll tell you rather than sell you a fumigation.

Questions we get asked

Can my guests stay in other rooms while one room is fumigated?

Only if that room can be completely sealed off and we're satisfied the rest of the building is safe. Often the better option is to move the affected items to a separate sealable space or outbuilding.

Can you fumigate a timber deck?

Not usually, because an open deck can't be sealed. Borer in structural or outdoor timber needs a different approach, which we'll explain after looking at it.

How do I prepare a guesthouse pantry for fumigation?

Remove food that isn't being treated, throw out anything heavily infested, and leave the rest for us to assess. We'll give you a specific list when we book.

Is fumigated furniture safe to use afterwards?

Yes. Once ventilation and clearance are complete, the fumigant has aired out and the furniture can go straight back into use.

Will fumigation also deal with rats in the roof?

No. Rodents need bait stations, traps and proofing, which is a separate treatment. We can arrange both if you need them.

Do you have to come out from George?

Yes, our office is in Denneoord, George, which is close to Wilderness, so getting to you for an assessment is straightforward.
