Most pest problems in Klein Brak River trace back to one of two things: the river, or the feed. Homes along the water get rodents and insects moving up from the banks, while smallholdings attract rats, mice and grain insects to wherever animal feed is stored. Deal with the source and the house usually takes care of itself.
A village between the river and the farm plots
Klein Brak River is a small village with houses along the river and smallholdings behind them. That mix matters. A riverside garden with thick reeds and bush gives rats cover and water. A plot with chickens, a horse or two, or a vegetable patch gives them food. Put a house in the middle with a warm roof, and you can see why rodents are such a regular problem here.
Insects follow similar patterns. Damp ground near the river suits ants and other crawling insects, and they head indoors after rain or when the weather turns. Feed sheds, tack rooms and pantries are where weevils, flour beetles and pantry moths settle. Dogs and cats that move between the yard, the stable and the house bring fleas with them.
Typical problems on a Klein Brak property
In the house
- Rats or mice in the ceiling, mostly from autumn into winter
- Ant trails in the kitchen, bathroom or around pet bowls
- Cockroaches behind the fridge or stove
- Fleas in carpets and pet bedding
Around the plot
- Rats under the chicken coop, around compost and in outbuildings
- Rodents chewing into feed bags and wiring in garages and sheds
- Weevils, beetles and moths in stored grain, seed and animal feed
How we go about it
On a smallholding we start outside. We walk the property to find where rodents are living and feeding, how they're getting into buildings and where insects are breeding. A house treatment on its own won't last if there's a rat colony under the chicken run twenty metres away.
For rodents we use lockable bait stations, traps and tracking powder. Stations are tamper-resistant, which matters with dogs, cats, chickens and children around. Where livestock or working dogs could come into contact with bait, we lean towards traps and tell you why.
For crawling insects, we use odourless, non-staining residual sprays as a barrier inside and around the outside of the house, plus gel baits for cockroaches and ant baits that the workers carry back to the nest. For stored product insects, the answer may be clearing out infested stock and treating the store, or, for a bigger infestation, fumigation in Klein Brak River.
For a normal treatment in the house, there's no need to unpack cupboards or move out. Once it's dry, it's safe for children and pets.
A local tip for plot owners
Keep animal feed in sealed metal bins or drums, raised off the floor, and only open one bag at a time. Torn bags on a shed floor are the biggest single draw for rats on a smallholding, and they also give grain insects somewhere to multiply. Feed chickens what they'll finish in a day, and collect leftovers before dark.
On the river side, keep a clear strip between dense bush or reeds and the house walls. Rodents prefer not to cross open ground, so even a mowed metre helps.
What people often get wrong
Getting a cat and expecting that to solve it. A good cat will catch some mice, but it won't keep up with a rat colony that has a steady food supply in the feed room. Cats also don't do anything about the gaps rodents use to get into the roof.
How much will it cost?
That depends on the size of the property, how many buildings are involved and how settled the problem is. A house-only ant or cockroach treatment is a small job. A smallholding with rodents in the house, the stable and the feed shed needs more stations, some proofing advice and at least one follow-up. If you'd like ongoing checks on a working plot, we can set up a regular service. We'll tell you what's included before we start.
If you've only seen a single mouse in the kitchen, a couple of traps and sealing the gap under the back door may be all you need. Once you're finding droppings in the feed room as well, it's time for a proper programme.

Questions we get asked
Is rodent bait safe around my chickens and dogs?
Loose bait isn't, which is why we use lockable stations that animals can't get into. Where there's any doubt, such as near poultry or working dogs, we use traps instead.
Do you treat outbuildings and feed sheds?
Yes. On a smallholding we include sheds, stables, garages and feed rooms, because that's usually where the problem starts.
I've found tiny beetles in my horse feed. What are they?
Most likely a stored product insect such as a weevil or flour beetle. Remove the infested bags and keep new stock sealed, and call us if it spreads to other feed.
Why do I get more rats in winter?
Colder, wetter weather pushes rodents to look for warm, dry shelter, and a roof space is ideal. Autumn is the best time to check for gaps.
Do you come out to Klein Brak from George?
Yes. Klein Brak River is part of our regular area along the coast between George and Mossel Bay.
