Who do you call about pests in a village this size? Us. Our office is in Denneoord, George, and Herolds Bay is a short drive south, so we treat homes here as part of our normal Garden Route work. Tell us what you're seeing, we'll inspect, find out why the pests are there, and treat the cause rather than just the ones in sight.
What turns up in houses on the slopes
Herolds Bay is a small cluster of houses on the hillside above the beach, many of them holiday homes. That shapes what we find.
- Ants trail in from the garden and coastal bush, especially after rain and when the weather warms up.
- Rats and mice move into quiet houses, garages and roof spaces when the owners are away. Fishing bait, bird seed and pet food in a garage are an invitation.
- Fish moths love humid sea air and live in bookshelves, linen cupboards and boxes of old papers.
- Spiders follow the insects, so a house with a lot of flies or moths around the outside lights tends to have a lot of webs too.
- Flies gather around braai areas, bins and anywhere fish gets cleaned.
- Cockroaches settle into kitchens that sit empty for weeks. We have a separate page on cockroach control in Herolds Bay.
Living here full-time versus owning a holiday house
The pest problems are similar, but the timing isn't. If you live in Herolds Bay year-round, you'll usually notice a problem early: a trail of ants one morning, a noise in the ceiling. We treat it, and the guarantee covers you if it comes back.
If the house is a holiday home or a rental, pests have weeks or months to settle in without anyone noticing. Rodents can chew through a lot of wiring and insulation between visits, and you tend to discover it the day you arrive. For owners in that position, the best plan is to treat before the busy season and have rodent bait stations in place while the house is closed.
How a visit runs
We walk the property first, inside and out. We look at the roof space, the kitchen, the garage and outbuildings, the garden edge and the drains. The point is to find the entry points, the places pests are sheltering and what they're feeding on. A treatment without that information is guesswork.
Then we treat to match what we found. For crawling insects that's usually an odourless, non-staining residual spray as a protective barrier inside and around the outside of the house, plus ant baits that workers carry back to the nest. For rodents, we use lockable bait stations, traps or tracking powder, and we point out where they're getting in so the gap can be closed.
There's no need to move out or unpack cupboards for a normal treatment. Once the spray is dry, the house is safe for children and pets.
A local tip: the garage is the problem room
In a beach village, the garage often doubles as the place for fishing tackle, bait, a chest freezer, braai wood and bags of charcoal. It's dark, it's seldom tidied and the door rarely seals at the bottom. That makes it the most common starting point for rodents and cockroaches in houses here. Fit a brush strip under the garage door, keep bait and pet food in sealed containers, and stack wood off the floor and away from the walls.
What people get wrong
A lot of owners assume that because the house is clean and empty, pests have nothing to live on. In reality an empty house is quiet, dark and undisturbed, which is exactly what rats, mice and cockroaches want. Clean helps, but it doesn't replace proofing and monitoring.
How much will it cost?
The price depends on what we're treating, the size of the house and garden, and how established the problem has become. A general insect treatment on a standard home is a fairly straightforward job. Rodents that have been living in the roof all winter, with proofing to sort out and follow-up visits to check the stations, take more. If you own a rental, we can talk about a regular schedule before each season. We quote free.
And honestly: a few ants on the counter after rain may well clear up with some ant bait from the shop and a wipe-down. If they keep coming back, or you've got a nest in the wall, that's when we come in.
We're SAPCA registered, our treatments come with a 3-month guarantee, and we've worked in the Garden Route for more than 25 years. You can also read about our rodent control in Herolds Bay, or see what we do across town on our George pest control page.

Questions we get asked
Do you charge extra to come out to Herolds Bay?
We'll tell you when we quote. Travel is one of the things we factor in, and we'll be clear about the full price before we start.
Why do ants pour into the house after rain?
Heavy rain floods their nests, so the colony moves to somewhere drier and often finds food on the way. That's why a long trail across the kitchen so often follows a wet night.
What are the silver insects in my linen cupboard?
Those are almost certainly fish moths. They feed on paper, starch and fabric and thrive in humid coastal houses. A residual treatment in the cupboards and shelves deals with them.
When is the best time of year to treat a holiday home?
Before the busy season. Treating a few weeks before you or your guests arrive gives baits time to work, and means the house is clear when it fills up.
Is the spray safe for my garden and the birds?
We apply residual spray in targeted bands around the house, not over the whole garden. Keep pets and children off treated areas until they're dry.
Do you also do businesses?
Yes. We do domestic, commercial and industrial work, so a guesthouse or rental business is no problem.
