Technician in protective clothing treating a room

Holiday towns move a lot of luggage, bedding and furniture through a lot of beds. Bed bugs travel the same way, and in a resort town like Hartenbos they can turn up anywhere.

Bed bugs in a Hartenbos flat, chalet or house are cleared with two thorough treatments about two weeks apart. The first kills the bugs that are hiding in the bed, the furniture and the cracks around it. The second, timed for when the eggs have hatched and before the young can breed, kills the next generation. In flats and complexes we also check the units next door and above and below, because bed bugs move through walls, plug points and pipe gaps, and treating one unit on its own can leave a source right next door.

We treat bed bugs in holiday flats, chalets and caravans, retirement units, homes and guest accommodation in Hartenbos and the towns close by.

How they arrive

Bed bugs don't come from dirt. They come in luggage, on clothing, in second-hand furniture and in the folds of bedding, and they feed on people regardless of how clean the place is. In a holiday town, where hundreds of families with their bags pass through flats and chalets every season, a single suitcase that sat on an infested bed somewhere else is enough. They also travel in the other direction: a holiday family can take them home to the city in their luggage.

Signs to look for

  • Itchy bites in lines or clusters, usually on skin exposed in bed: arms, shoulders, neck, face
  • Small black spots, like ink dots, along mattress seams, the edges of the base and the joints of headboards
  • Tiny pale eggs and shed skins in seams and cracks
  • Flat, reddish-brown bugs about the size of an apple pip, hiding in the same places during the day
  • Small blood spots on sheets and pillowcases

Not everyone reacts to bites, so the one person scratching may not be the only one being fed on.

Getting ready for the first treatment

Preparation makes a big difference. Before we arrive:

  • Strip the beds in affected rooms, seal the linen in plastic bags inside the room, and wash it on a hot cycle and tumble-dry it
  • Bag clothes that were on the floor or on the bed and wash them the same way
  • Pull the beds slightly away from the walls
  • Clear clutter from under the beds and around them, but don't carry it into other rooms
  • Leave furniture in place; moving it spreads the bugs

For older residents who can't strip beds or move things, tell us when you book. We'll talk through what's needed and, in retirement villages, work with staff or family to get it done.

What we treat

Mattresses and bases, bed frames, headboards and the wall behind them, bedside tables, skirtings, curtain rails, plug points, couches and chairs in the room, and every crack and seam within reach of where people sleep and sit. In a flat we look at the shared walls and service points, and we'll recommend checking the units around it.

When it's dry, go back to sleeping in your usual bed. You're the bait that draws the survivors out across the treated surfaces.

Holiday flats and chalets

If you let a flat or manage chalets, a guest reporting bites is a moment to act quickly and quietly. Close the room or unit, move the guests somewhere well away from it, bag the linen in the room and have it washed hot. Don't shift mattresses or furniture into other units. Call us, and we'll plan both treatments around your bookings.

For holiday letting, a check at each changeover catches problems early. Cleaners can look along mattress seams and behind headboards in a minute or two per bed. A unit with a problem caught on the first night stays a one-unit problem.

Caravans

Bed bugs can live in caravans and park homes too, in the bed base, the seat cushions and the cracks around the fittings. Treating a caravan needs care because of the confined space, and the same two-treatment approach applies.

After the second treatment

Keep watching for a few weeks after the second visit: look at the mattress seams when you change the sheets, and note any new bites. A bite or two in the first days after the second visit can still happen. Fresh black spots or live bugs a month later mean something was missed, often a piece of furniture moved before treatment or an untreated unit next door, and we'll come back to find it.

Second-hand furniture

Hartenbos flats are often furnished with beds and couches bought second-hand or handed down. Before a used bed, mattress or upholstered piece comes in, check the seams, the underside and the joints. If you see black spots or bugs, leave it outside.

What it costs

Pricing is based on the number of rooms or units, how much furniture is in them, whether neighbouring units need treating, and whether it's a house, a flat, a chalet or a caravan. Both treatments are included in the quote, so there's no surprise for the second visit.

Frequently asked questions

We got bitten on holiday in Hartenbos. Could we have taken bed bugs home?

It's possible. Unpack outside or in the bathroom, wash everything hot, and check suitcases and seams before they go back in the cupboard. If bites continue at home, call us.

Do the units next door need treating too?

Often, yes. Bed bugs move through shared walls, plug points and pipe gaps, so we check the units on either side and above and below.

Is one treatment enough?

No. Eggs come through the first treatment unharmed, so a second visit roughly a fortnight later deals with the hatchlings before they mature.

My mother lives in a retirement unit and can't move furniture. Can you still treat?

Yes. Tell us when you book, and we'll arrange the preparation with her, the staff or family. Nothing heavy needs moving.

Can bed bugs live in a caravan?

Yes, in the bed base, cushions and the cracks around fittings. A caravan is treated the same way, with two visits.

How can cleaners spot bed bugs between guests?

By checking mattress seams, the edges of the base and behind the headboard at every changeover for black spots, eggs or bugs.
